1.Спортивные состязания ковбоев [ cowboy], обычно состоящие из пяти основных видов: скачки на неоседланной лошади [ bareback riding], скачки на диком бычке [ bull riding], заарканивание (стреноживание) бычка [ calf-roping], езда на оседланном жеребчике [ saddle-bronc riding], борьба с бычком [ steer-wrestling], а также показательных выступлений: скачки на крупе неоседланной лошади [barrel racing] вокруг расставленных бочек, гонки на походных кухнях [ chuckwagon races], групповое заарканивание [ team roping], дойка дикой коровы [ wild-cow milking]. Родео является профессиональным видом спорта. Оно зародилось в конце XIX в., во время ежегодных встреч ковбоев по окончании перегона скота. Началу коммерциализации родео послужило шоу "Дикий Запад" [ Wild West Show]. Первое родео, организованное специально для публики, состоялось в поселке Прескотт [Prescott], шт. Аризона, в 1888. В наши дни проводятся крупные общенациональные состязания: Хьюстонская животноводческая выставка и родео [ Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo], соревнования в "Мэдисон скуэр гарден" [ Madison Square Garden] в Нью-Йорке и "Колизее" [Coliseum] в г. Чикаго и др., а также родео местного значения, приуроченные обычно к ярмаркам штата или округа [ state fair; county fair] и животноводческим выставкам. Многие состязания проводятся под руководством крупных спортивных организаций. Родео стало международным видом спорта, получив распространение помимо США в Канаде и Австралии2. истИспользовался для подсчета и клеймения скота, стада которого паслись всю зиму на воле.
